The game of poker has grown in popularity all over the world during the past decade and so has the debate on whether poker is a game of skill or a game of chance. A number of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) graduates in the past have proven that you can get ahead in the game of poker if you rely on a strategy that involves mathematics and applied theory.

During the 1990s, an MIT Blackjack Team used similar strategies to win hundreds of thousands of dollars and would later go on to release a book entitled ‘Bringing Down The House” which documented the team’s exploits.

Now MIT has decided to make available a free online poker course that will teach interested poker players how to improve their online poker strategy by using math and applied theory.

Currently only Nevada, New Jersey and Delaware have legalized online poker but there are more than five states debating the possibility of legalizing online poker. However the online poker market in Europe and Asia has grown considerably over the years and online poker players are always looking for ways to improve their online poker strategy.

MIT recently announced the availability of its new course “Poker Theory and Analytics” which will be made available free of cost this summer. This course will be a part of the OpenCourseWare initiatives from MIT and will consist of eleven lectures, PDF’s of class notes and a syllabus. The class will be taught by Kevin Desmond who is an MIT finance graduate and an analyst at Morgan Stanley.

The MIT course will focus on helping online poker players master the basics and also look at factors that most poker players don’t pay attention to. Some of these factors will include betting and raising patterns, seating arrangements and judging the future behavior of one’s opponents based on past behavioral patterns. The course will prepare individuals on a number of topics by equipping them with strategies that they can use in their everyday life. One such example will be risk management and the takeaways from this topic can be used by investors to get ahead of the game.

The course will also require attendees to play online poker and practice what you have learnt in the class. However only fake money will be used as part of the learning process so that none of the attendees will have to pay from their pocket for practical classes.

6.176, or MIT Pokerbots, is a computerized poker tournament. Teams have one month to program a completely autonomous pokerbot to compete against other teams.
Competitors must learn and apply concepts in economics, mathematics, and computer science not normally developed together in academic settings in order to conquer their opponents and emerge victorious.

As a game of incomplete information and uncertainty, poker is a prime application of the game theory concepts and decision making skills essential to trading. While traders make risk decisions based on the limited information they get from the markets, poker players make decisions based on hidden information as well, taking into account factors such as expected value and probability distributions.

I thought this was a programming competition? What language is it in?

It is! To build a working pokerbot only requires both critical thinking ability and an eagerness to learn. However, an understanding of machine learning, algorithms, and data science can go a long way towards creating an advanced pokerbot. Competitiors can code in whatever language they want, but we only offer support in C++, Python, and Java.

Machine learning? Algorithms? Exactly how much coding experience is necessary?

We welcome students with all levels of programming experience. Nevertheless, some previous coding experience would certainly be helpful. Although not necessary, we recommend you have at least one team member with some programming experience.

What form of poker will it be?

We are keeping the game and tournament structure secret. You will hear all about it during the challenge unveiling in early January 2021.

How do I receive course credit?

You will need to submit functioning pokerbots for various checkpoints throughout the course, as well as a short strategy report at the end of IAP.

Do I have to be an MIT student to participate?

For our course and tournament in January, you must be able to register for MIT IAP classes. If you are cross-registering, bring your papers in on the first day of class for us to sign.

How much time will it take to make a pokerbot?

Creating a functioning pokerbot takes no time at all. However, creating a competitive and strategic pokerbot will require more effort and experimentation. Ultimately, the more you put into your pokerbot, the more value you will receive from the class!
